King David was an amazing man of God and there are so many areas of his life that we ought to imitate. However, in the area of fatherhood, he had his share of struggles. David had a wife by the name of Haggith who gave his two sons–Absalom and Adonijah. Both of these boys would grow up to be wild and wicked men that would try to take the kingdom by force. Both of their lives ended in a tragic death. When we look at their lives we are prompted to ask–“What in the world went wrong?” They both were highly gifted men that could have done great things for God–what happened? The Word of God is a book of open secrets and it gives us the answers to these questions. In 2 Samuel 13:27 the Bible says, “But Absalom pressed him [David], that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him.” Here is our first clue as to why these boys turned out the way they did. When Absalom pressed David on a certain matter, David gave in. He did not stand his ground. David was a permissive parent. In 1 Kings 1:6a the Bible says, “And his father [David] had not displeased him [Adonijah] at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so?” Here we find the second clue. David was a passive parent. Our world is filled with Absaloms and Adonijahs. There is a generation of young people that are out of control. Why? Because of permissive, passive parenting. Oh, for some moms and dads that will stand their ground and passionately engage in the lives of their children!
